May 2018
Sustainability Tour of Parkville Campus Run by University Staff.
The group of nineteen, saw the sustainable vegetable garden for students, the herb garden, numerous locations on the Parkville campus with solar panels, numerous rain water tanks, the beehives, various experiments with respect to geo-thermal cooling and heating, studies on choices of plants for roof gardens, soil and gravel filtration of rainwater experiments and the amazing, tall beehive in the System Garden. See photo. You can open one of the doors to this hive and see the honey being laid down. We were told that even though they are friendly bees, they do not like light when working so it is important to have only a quick look.
April 2018
Biodiversity Tour of the Parkville Campus run by University Staff
Tour was attended by two Committee of Convocation members. It focused on the measures that were in place to create a sustainable campus. Only one other person attended the tour. These tours are run several times during the year by University of Melbourne staff.
On March 8, 2016, we visited the School of Dance at the VCA campus in Southbank.
It was a wonderful visit where we learnt about the work of the school and its history. The tour was hosted by Prof Jenny Kinder, Head of School.

Visit to Janet Clarke Hall (JCH) on May 20, 2016
The small group of Committee of Convocation members was shown around the College and grounds, by the Principal, Dr Damien Powell.
Dr Powell, with the College architect Mr O Connor, had taken great care to ensure that there was a lot of light, with a clear view of the outdoor rear courtyard from as many rooms as possible. A large portrait of Lady Janet Clarke adorns the Senior Common Room. The College was home to a large number of distinguished Australian women when they were at the University of Melbourne. Today it is co-educational. Students clean their own rooms and also are on a roster to help out with cleaning common areas. The focus is on keeping the number of residents to less than one hundred. There are very few non-resident members. Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner are provided from the college kitchen, however students may prepare their own meals in student kitchens.
We were treated to amusing stories about Billy, the handyman, who lived at JCH and used to get up to mischief in the CBD. In times past the women who lived in JCH had to pass a cooking exam.
The JCH buildings and the tennis court are Heritage protected. Many of the students are able to live at JCH as a result of College Scholarships.
We enjoyed our visit to JCH and were pleasantly surprised when Dr Powell went into the Office and emerged with a gift of a CD featuring Anna Goldsworthy and students and the latest JCH magazine for each of us as we left. IJ

July 2016

October 2016
A trial pre-meeting visit of only 20 min to the Arts West Building. Little can be seen in such a short time and certainly this format will not permit visits to places at a distance from where the meeting that follows is held.
